MYWELLFLEET PHOTO ESSAYS: Humpback Whale lands at Newcomb's Hollow
But as I came closer it became huge! A representative of the Center for Coastal Studies was there with the guy who first found the whale and called it in.
This view is head-on. The thing hanging out of the mouth is part of its throat or stomach. It did not appear to have been hit by a ship or show any other obvious injury. The CCS person said they would do some post mortem work on it the following day. They will also try to identify it by the markings on its flukes (tail fins).
The flipper was about 10' long and had barnacles growing along the trailing edge.
They began to measure the whale.
It measured about 40 feet long.
